ORLANDO, Fla. -- Hearing Cindy Anthony say she still believes her granddaughter Caylee is alive makes many think one of two things: she's got some serious mental health issues, or she's in deep denial.

A mental health counselor said both may be true, but he also introduced a third theory.

It was a statement that can only be described as shocking.

"I still think Caylee's alive,” Cindy testified Thursday.

Cindy Anthony claims to believe her granddaughter, Caylee, is still alive.

Cindy made that claim despite the fact that a year and a half ago, remains that were confirmed to be Caylee through DNA tests were found not far from the Anthony home.

Not long after, the family held a memorial service where Cindy publically grieved.

So does Cindy really believe Caylee is alive? On “The TODAY Show” Friday morning, the Anthony's attorney said yes.

“That's her hope, that's her wish, that's her thought and until she's ready to relinquish that, it's going to stay in her mind,” said attorney Brad Conway.

Mental health counselor Jim West thinks Cindy Anthony may be stuck in denial, which is one of the first stages of grief.

“It's a lot easier to believe she's alive than that her daughter was alleged to have killed her. It's much easier,” said West.

West said that if Cindy really believes Caylee is alive, she clearly needs professional help to move on with grieving. But he also has another possible explanation for Cindy making such an outrageous statement.

“She’s maybe trying to discredit herself by making statements like this that would make her sound crazy so that they wouldn't use the 911 calls as evidence. That way maybe she could save her daughter from the death penalty,” said West.

I don't see Cindy purposely making herself look defective. This is just another one of her lies. Just like she knows there was no dead body in the dam car, it was rotten pizza.

If she keeps this up, GA may actually become the voice for Caylee and turn on her and her ways, as well as 'her' daughter.

I agree Cindy was purposely lying. Whether she was thinking somebody would buy the lie, lying out of habit, or trying to make herself sound crazy, I don't know.

I think all the public has ever wanted from the Anthony's was for at least one of them to see the light and be the voice for Caylee. It would be great if it happened, but I don't see it. IMO, George is ticked off at Casey's accusations, but I think he showed up yesterday to show his support for Cindy, and as long as she is in denial, he will back her.

I haven't had time to read (or check) this whole thread but is the complete hearing posted somewhere?

J4a, I think the only reason GA was in the courtroom was because Conway said he had to be there to show support for CA. When asked earlier, Conway said the entire family would be there.

Mama, I hope you are right. It would be great if GA saw the light. There is no reason he should put up with Casey's accusations, if false, or put up with Cindy insisting that they cover for the person who murdered their granddaughter. George is the only hope. Cindy's not going to see the light, and it's apparent that Lee won't either after watching his sweet little message to Casey.

I do not believe she is either delusional or in denial. I believe she is saying whatever she thinks she needs to say AT THAT MOMENT. I think she has done that from the beginning.

I think CA is a narcissist and most likely a sociopath, just like her daughter. IMO, she knows KC murdered Caylee.... she just will NEVER admit it publicly. She can't possibly be so stupid to NOT realize everything that has been released in discovery points to one person and one person only.

Besides, it wouldn't be good for the "Foundation" if she admitted her daughter killed her granddaughter.... not exactly the same as the family of a truly missing child, now is it?

IMO, Cindy did at the hearing only what she had to do to keep her own butt out of trouble. BC most likely counseled her against perjuring herself.... However, CA reverted to her old lies on both direct and re-direct by JB...... but because of LDB's skill at cross-examination, she got out of CA just what she needed. And Cindy never saw it coming!

I hate that woman, I hate everything about her. She knows exactly what she's doing. This is what she does when someone attacks her. Its her way of getting away with something. "Theyre not going to mess around with the "Anthonys" because we will always win, we will ALWAYS win" Isnt that what she told Tim Miller? She's got a mental issue alright. She's old and crazy.

AJ-that makes alot of sense. How can Casey be convicted of Caylee's murder, (and how can the A's be accused of misappropriating funds) when (they believe) Caylee is still alive, right? I bet that's what Cindy is doing, laying the groundwork for that excuse.

Here's an idea for Cindy (and Bozo).....track down Jim McIntyre, add him to Casey's witness list!

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A 911 recording in which Casey Anthony's mother tells a dispatcher that her daughter's car smells like a dead body can be used during the Florida woman's first-degree murder trial. Judge Belvin Perry, Jr. ruled during a pretrial hearing Thursday that the 911 recording can be introduced during the trial next May.

Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy, testified that when she called 911 in July 2008 she wanted to get the dispatcher's attention so that officers would come out to her house

More than an hour after sitting on the stand testifying on Thursday, Cindy Anthony said something that took the courtroom by surprise.

"I still think Caylee is alive."

Cindy would not answer questions after court, but on Friday, FOX 35 sat down with her attorney Brad Conway asking him about Cindy's surprising comment.

"The grieving process is different for everybody, and acceptance I think is one of the most difficult parts of grieving," said Conway , "and she's doing amazingly well for what she's been through."

When asked if Cindy truly believed that Caylee could really still be out there somewhere, Conway responded, " I don't know the answer to that really. I know we do continue to get letters from people saying that they've seen Caylee in various states including New York City. So that does not help her get through the acceptance part of grieving."

Conway says the Anthonys are still dealing with the emotions of Thursday's hearing. Cindy took the stand two years to the day to her controversial 911 call that changed their lives.

"There's something wrong. We found my daughters car today. It smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car," Cindy said in a call to 911 on July 15, 2008.

Thursday marked the first time that the entire Anthony Family -- Cindy, George, Lee and Casey -- has come together since October 2008. Both cindy and her son Lee had to testify.

"Watching their son go through that was really hard for both of them," said Conway. He also told FOX 35 that dealing with the loss of little Caylee has been a daily struggle for this whole family.

Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and has said a baby sitter kidnapped her daughter, Caylee. The toddler's remains were found about six months after the mother said she last saw her alive. "I still think Caylee is alive," Cindy Anthony said during the
hearing.

Cindy doesn't believe Caylee is still alive, nor is she in some sort of denial about Caylee being dead....she had the remains cremated! She wouldn't have cremated someone else's child.

I think she's just hoping to be deemed crazy as a Junebug so she won't have to testify against Casey.

What did he mean by this?????? Lee didn't seem to have any problem on the stand. I know he giggled about 8 times, but I think he does that when he is nervous. I thought he did very well with the questions he was asked.

You've got to remember, this is the Anthonys....they only care about the agenda of winning this case...they don't care about 'people', not even Caylee being dead - which they forgot about as soon as they started defending Casey. They probably meant it was hard to sit there and wonder if Lee was going to screw up something.
