Emma Thompson -- Deceased 6/27/09

Post by Ann - Tx on Tue Aug 31, 2010 12:44 pm

Emma Thompson was a beautiful, 4-year-old girl, who died a brutal, horrific death on June 27, 2009. Emma lived in Spring, Texas (north of Houston, Tx) with her mother, Abigail (Abby) Young, a sister and one half-sister. They lived in a beautiful home, with a swimming pool, in an upscale neighborhood.

For a slideshow of Emma Thompson, please click on the Link below:

http://www.click2houston.com/slideshow/news/20360317/detail.html

At the time of Emma's brutal, horrific death, Abigail Young was a Registered Nurse and was employed at Woman's Hospital of Texas in the Houston area. She worked in Labor & Delivery.

Emma's parents were separated in April, 2009. Emma's father, Benjamin (Ben) Thompson, had visitation rights. Emma's bruises were first noticed by her father, Ben, in early June, 2009. Thompson told Young to take Emma to the doctor or he would.

On June 8, 2009, Emma was examined by her pediatrician. Her doctor found she had vaginal and oral herpes, along with bruising inconsistent with the explanations offered by Abigail Young. She did note that Emma had a 102-degree fever and blisters on her fingers, inside her mouth and in her vaginal area and that she ran a series of tests. The doctor notified Texas Child Protective Services (CPS). On June 11, test results came back positive for herpes.

During an investigation by CPS, Young lied to the investigator and said she was the only adult living in her home with Emma and her two other daughters. She failed to tell them about her boyfriend Lucas Ruric Coe, who has a lengthy criminal history.

"The system failed Emma"
Girl's slaying followed chances to prevent tragedy

Before Lucas Coe was accused of inflicting the injuries that may have killed 4-year-old Emma Thompson, there were at least five chances to keep him behind bars in two different counties.

The last opportunity came just three months before Emma turned up in a Houston area emergency room, sexually abused and fatally beaten. Both Coe, 27, and his girlfriend, Emma's mother, Abigail Young, 33, have been charged with injury to a child in Emma's June 27 death. No trial date has been set.

But a closer look at Coe's criminal history reveals some troubling facts — any of which might have altered the turn of events that led up to the Spring girl's homicide.

While Coe was serving six years probation for a 2002 Harris County aggravated assault, records show, he was convicted for DWI, pled guilty to a Montgomery County assault, failed to meet with a probation officer, got behind in his restitution to the Harris County victim and was indicted on a child abuse charge in Montgomery County.

Four motions to revoke his probation in the Harris County case were made: two in 2005 and two in 2008.

~~~~~~~
Based on the CPS interview with Young, Emma was not removed from her home. On June 27, 2009, Young supposedly went shopping and left Emma and her two other daughters with Coe. Per testimony at Young's trial, when she came back from her second shopping trip, she fixed sloppy joe's and then checked on Emma.
Young attempted to 'Super Glue' Emma's skull together before taking her to the emergency room by private vehicle. Young, a Registered Nurse, did not call 911 (EMS). Young drove down the street and stopped. During Young's trial, it was disclosed that Young pulled Emma out of the back seat and called 911. Passersby stopped and did CPR on Emma until EMS arrived. While EMS was working on Emma, Young was on her cell phone per trial testimony. It is assumed that Young did this to give Lucas Coe a chance to leave the area.
As soon as Young left her home with Emma, Lucas Ruric Coe, went to a next door neighbor with Young's two other children (ages 6 and 11 at the time) and asked the neighbor to watch them because he was not suppose to have contact with them and he needed to leave. The neighbor noticed the flashing lights down the street. Coe told her that was for Emma. Coe, who was not suppose to have unsupervised contact with his daughter, who was 4 at the time and had signs of sexual abuse, had his daughter with him and they left.
Emma was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital - The Woodlands, Tx. (just north of Houston) where she was pronounced dead. At Young's trial, testimony indicated Young told the neighbors, when she came back from the hospital, that she bleached her bathroom before she attempted to take Emma to the Emergency Room.
A short time after Emma died, Young moved to Brenham, Tx, her hometown. Young's mother, Margie Routt Young, is CEO and Director of the Foundation of Scott & White, Brenham, Tx. (up until a few weeks ago, it was known as Trinity Medical Center, Brenham, Tx. and Routt Young held the same position as she does today). Many people in Washington County (Brenham and surrounding area) feel that Abigail was hired because of the position her mother held and continues to hold with The Foundation of the hospital. She serves on the Board of Directors with the hospital administrator.
Abigail Young was hired as a Registered Nurse to work in Labor & Delivery at Trinity. On August 10, 2009, Abigail Young, in her uniform, was arrested at Trinity Medical Center by Brenham Police. Later that evening, she was transported to Houston, Tx. about 70 miles away.
At the same time Young was being arrested, Lucas Ruric Coe, was being arrested in Montgomery County, Tx. (adjacent to Harris County, Houston, Tx.). He attempted to run but was apprehended by Law Enforcement. At the time of Coe's arrest, he had on a black t-shirt with the following: "It is all fun and games until the cops show up."
For the video of Young and Coe after their arrest and in the process of being taken to the Harris County Jail, Houston, Tx, please click here:
"Mom, Boyfriend Charged In Girl's Death"
KPRC
[i][i][i][i][i]
The lead detective (investigator) in Emma's case, A. J. Kelly, Harris County Sheriff's Office, said in a press conference this is the worst case of child abuse he has ever seen in his 19 years in Law Enforcement.
Abigail Young retained attorneys in Houston, Tx and was out on $50,000 bond until her trial which started with jury selection on June 28, 2010 (1 year and 1 day after Emma died a brutal, horrific death) in Houston, Harris County, Tx.
After the jury deliberated for nearly four hours, Young's trial concluded on Monday, July 12, 2010 with a guilty verdict of the lesser charge of recklessness. Young was initially charged with serious bodily injury to a child by omission, which is a first degree felony, and she could have received life in prison. Young was taken into immediate custody by the Harris County Sheriff's Office and was taken to the Harris County Jail, Houston, Tx. The punishment phase was scheduled for the next day, July 13, 2010.
On July 13, 2010, the punishment phase began for Abigail Young. After testimony from both sides and closing arguments, the jury handed down the following sentence: 20 years in prison, $10,000 fine. When the Judge read the sentence, Young's knees buckled and she started crying. She had to sit down.
Abigail Young is currently in the Harris County Jail awaiting transfer to a Texas prison as evidenced by the information below. This information is from the Harris County Sheriff's Office - Public Information Inquiry, Houston, Tx.
Per Texas law, Abigail Young will be eligible for parole in five (5) years. During the Victim's Impact Statement for Emma Thompson, Ben Thompson, Emma's father, vowed he or a member of his family would be at every parole hearing for Abigail Young and speak against her.
Only two people spoke on behalf of Emma during the Victim's Impact Statement . . . . her father, Ben Thompson, and her paternal grandmother, Laurie Thompson. Ben spoke loudly and with what appears to be anger to Abigail Young. Laurie Thompson spoke eloquently and lovingly about Emma. She let all know who the real Abigail Young is since she was part of the family at one time. I feel Laurie's statement was outstanding!
"Mom gets 20 years in daughter's death"
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Jurors have decided how long a woman should serve behind bars for failing to protect her daughter from a deadly beating.
Those jurors deliberated for about an hour and a half Tuesday afternoon following closing arguments in the trial of Abigail Young, and returned a sentence of 20 years and a $10,000 fine. With good behavior, Young could get out of prison in five years.
Young was found guilty Monday of failing to protect her 4-year-old daughter from repeated physical and sexual abuse last year, allegedly at the hands of Young's boyfriend, Lucas Coe.
After the sentence was read, Emma's father, Ben Thompson, and his mother read victim impact statements.
Ben Thompson yelled in the direction of Young, "She was four years old. She had her whole life in front of her and you took that away from her."
In my opinion, this is an excellent Link. Below the main video box, there are about 7 videos of various stages of the trial. Katie McCall, Reporter, KTRK, Houston, Tx covered the trial. All video is live.
Within the article, is a blue box (to the left) titled 'Related Content' with excellent articles.
Sadly, no one from Emma's maternal side of the family spoke on her behalf. I guess this should not surprise me because Emma is buried in a cemetery in Brenham, Tx. To this day, precious Emma who died a brutal, horrific death, still does not have a tombstone. She just has a little marker, provided by Memorial Oaks Chapel (funeral home), Brenham, Tx, with her name on it, date of birth and date of death. As of Monday, August 30, 2010, there was only a bouquet of silk faded red roses on Emma's grave! When I visit my maternal grandparents grave (which is often), I always stop and visit precious Emma Thompson!
Lucas Ruric Coe 's trial is scheduled for September 13, 2010 in Houston, Harris County, Tx. I will be following Coe's trial closely and I do plan to attend a few days of his trial if my schedule permits.
After doing a public inquiry from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, I notice Coe has a court date of 9-9-10. It was 9-13-10. Perhaps that is the day jury selection starts with trial date of 9-13-10. If I get a chance, I will call the Harris County District Attorney's Office or the Court Coordinator in Court #232 and get clarification for the aforementioned.
Coe is currently being held in Houston, Harris County, Tx. at the Harris County Jail. His bond was finally set at $300,000 and he has not made bail. This info is from the Harris County Sheriff's Office - Public Information Inquiry:
I will keep this thread updated during the trial. All main stream media in Houston, Tx, Brenham, Tx, and Bryan, Tx. covered Abigail Young's trial. Once Associated Press (AP) picked up the story, it was covered by major media outlets in Texas such as Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Waco, Beaumont, San Angelo, El Paseo, etc. I also saw coverage in Mexico and New Mexico. There could have been other states that covered the story but I did not monitor it. My assumption is that Coe's trial will definitely be covered by major media outlets. A few days before Young's trial, a national TV station online website did a very interesting and informative story on Young's upcoming trial. If I can find it, I will post it.
After Coe's trial regarding Emma Thompson's brutal, horrific death concludes with punishment phase, he is scheduled to go on trial in Montgomery County (county just north of Harris County, Tx) on a case involving a young boy in Montgomery County.
In Emma Thompson's case, Coe is charged with super aggravated sexual assualt of a child less than 6 years old. The State of Texas (Harris County District Attorney Prosecutors) will be seeking the maximum sentence for Coe which is Life in Prison without Parole. The minimum Coe could get is 20 years in prison.
Justice for precious Emma Thompson! afro
Julie, thank you for posting the Victim's Impact Statement YouTube video. I did not realize this was on YouTube!
I think Laurie is a lady with class! She was gracious enough to even thank the defense attorneys.
Emma was so lucky to have such a wonderful "grandma" in her little short life!
On Thursday, 8-13-09, there was a Candlelight Vigil held for Emma Thompson in Spring, Tx. Her aunt, Amanda Young Matthew, was a guest speaker.
Unfortunately, none of the videos (except snippets) of the vigil are no longer available.
Two of the songs played and sung at the Vigil were: Sissy's Song by Alan Jackson and Amazing Grace.
Amazing Grace was sung at Emma's Candlelight Vigil on
8-13-09.
I would like to post this rendition sung by Rhema Marvanne, a 7-year-old Gospel singer. Rhema's mother died of cancer when Rhema was younger. Rhema has appeared on Maury Povich's Talent Show segment.
This is a beautiful YouTube video and I think Emma would like Amazing Grace sung by Rhema!
Very informative article and video!
Prosecutors: 4-Yr-Old Raped and Killed
Updated: Tuesday, 29 Jun 2010, 6:06 PM CDT
DAMALI KEITH
Reporter - Fox 26, Houston, Tx
HOUSTON - An emotional day in court in the trial of a mother who's daughter prosecutors say was sexually assaulted, beaten and killed.
You may remember the four-year-old was diagnosed with herpes three weeks before she died.
Dozens of the four year old's autopsy photos were shown to jurors. They were very graphic pictures of her fractured skull.
Snapshots of more than eighty bruises on her little face, mouth and body were also shown and photos of evidence the four-year-old was sexually assaulted.
Abigail Young cried uncontrollably at the sight of the first autopsy photo of her daughter. She broke down again as the doctor who performed Emma Thompson's autopsy explained the trauma to the four-year-old.
According to prosecutors Emma died that night in June of last year after she was raped and beaten by her mother's boyfriend Lucas Coe.
"The defendant's relationship and love for Lucas Coe far outweighed the love for her daughter" says prosecutor Tina Ansari.
Three weeks before little Emma's death the four year old was diagnosed with genital herpes.
Young's attorney says her client, who was a nurse, thought her daughter contracted herpes through non-sexual contact with other kids.
After Abigail Young was released on $50,000 bond, she gave an exclusive interview to KHOU (CBS) - Houston, Tx. Her attorneys were on either side of her during the interview.
KHOU no longer has the interview available for viewing.
KBTX (CBS), Bryan, Tx, covered the story about the interview on their news and showed snippets of the interview. The video is not available but the article is.
Keep in mind . . . this interview took place less than two months after Emma died a brutal, horrific death. Instead of being concerned about Emma's pain and suffering, Young is concerned about the 'hell she is in', how she feels, blah, blah, blah.
In a way, she reminds me of Casey Anthony . . . . me, me, me!
Disgusting to say the least!
The above is just my opinion!
Nurse Charged in Child's Death Can't Describe "Hell I'm In"
Posted: 10:14 PM Aug 12, 2009
Reporter: Courtney Zubowski, KHOU 11 News
A woman charged in the brutal beating death of her daughter says she’s a good mother who would never hurt a child.
“Words can’t describe the hell that I’m in,” Abbey Young said in an exclusive interview with KHOU 11 News.
Abbey Young and her ex-boyfriend, Lucas Coe, are facing injury to a child charges in connection with the death of 4-year-old Emma Thompson.
Emma died at a Woodlands hospital on June 27.
An autopsy showed Emma had 80 contusions among other injuries. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to her abdominal area.
"My hope is that somehow God took care of her and that she didn't know what was happening to her," Young said.
Investigators arrested Coe and Young on Monday. Coe has been in jail since then. Young is out of jail on a $50,000 bond.
“I want people to know my side, how I’m feeling,” said Young.
On June 28, 2010, ABC News (National - online) posted an article about prosecutions of a parent for harming a child by omission are unusual. This was posted regarding Abigail Young's trial. It is a 2 page article and is very informative. The second page includes an interview with one of Young's neighbors.
Rare Prosecution of Mother for Failing to Protect Her Daughter From Abuse
Prosecutions of a Parent for Harming a Child By Omission Are Unusual
Houston nurse Abigail Young went on trial today on charges she failed to prevent the death of her 4-year-old daughter whose body was battered with 80 bruises, had a severed pancreas and a fractured skull.
There were also indications that the girl had been sexually abused.
Young, 34, faces up to life in prison if convicted on the one count of injury to a child by omission. Jury selection began today in Young's unusual case.
Her daughter, Emma Thompson, died June 27, 2009.
Young's boyfriend at the time, Lucas Coe, 28, is to be tried in September on charges of aggravated sexual assault. At the time of Emma's death, Coe was facing an unrelated child abuse charge in another county.
The prosecution of a mother for not protecting a child is rare, legal experts said.
Sandra Guerra Thompson, a criminal law professor at the University of Houston Law Center, told ABCNews.com that the prosecution of a parent, especially a mother, for causing harm to a child by omission were highly unusual. "Most of the times when a child is harmed by a parent, the other parent is usually found to be also a victim of the abusive parent," Guerra Thompson said. "Although technically, like in this case, the mother has an obligation to protect the child and report the abuse, because of her status as a victim as well and really her psychological helplessness, prosecutors generally exercise their discretion not to charge."
Guerra Thompson called the case of Abigail Young case "eye-opening."
~Snipped from Page 2~
Julius Villareal, a neighbor, told ABCNews.com. that Young appeared unusually calm given the circumstances and that she gave neighbors contradictory versions of what had happened.
Young and her boyfriend Lucas Ruric Coe are charged in the death of Young's 4-year-old daughter Emma Thompson. Authorities have said Emma suffered 80 bruises, a fractured skull, a brain hemorrhage and a vaginal tear.
"She told one group one thing and then told another group of neighbors a totally different story," he said. "She was cool, calm and collected. She seemed kind of normal for someone who just lost a child."
Villareal said Young told neighbors that Emma had fallen off the toilet in the bathroom, cracking her skull and splitting her lip. She described in detail how the girl suffered extensive bruising from CPR attempts. Young said extensive bruising on the girl's thighs was caused when she pulled Emma from the car once the girl passed out.
"The most surprising thing I saw was her reaction when officers were getting ready to enter her house," Villareal told ABCNews.com. "She seemed nervous. She tried to stall them and said she said she didn't have a key."
Villareal said Young went out of her way to mention that Coe was good to her and her girls. "In front of everyone, she was telling her oldest daughter that her boyfriend never hurt any of you girls and that he was nice to everybody," he said. "It was like she was coaching her."
Snaz . . . .
Thank you for making Emma's thread look beautiful! Your skill is awesome! You have made this thread "come alive" and made it a special place for precious little Emma!
I appreciate you posting the pictures, videos, obit and putting the articles in italics. Regarding Emma, this is the most beautiful thread I've ever seen on the Internet! There is no other blog that has such a beautiful thread for Emma!
Precious little Emma was short changed in life by a mother who was suppose to love and protect her. Her short little 4-year-old life ended with her having genital herpes, being allegedly raped and brutally assaulted by Lucas Ruric Coe.
No four year old should be subjected to such a horrific death including a severed pancreas, busted lips, 80 contusions, vaginal injuries, massive internal injuries and a fractured (cracked) skull ! According to the autopsy report, Emma's fatal injuries occurred 12 to 24 hours before her death. She did experience pain and suffering. The Medical Examiner stated blunt force abdominal trauma as Emma's cause of death.
It has been over a year and her maternal grandmother, Margie Routt Young, who resides in Brenham, Tx, where Emma is buried, still has not bought Emma a tombstone, cradle, or ledger. I would think Emma's family would want her to have a beautiful tombstone with a ledger and cradle. Money is not an object. Routt Young can certainly afford it.
A Houston Chronicle reporter, who has covered Emma's case from day one, came to Brenham a few days before Abigail Young's trial started. Pictures were taken of Emma's grave and one picture was published in the Houston Chronicle in an article. I've been trying to find the article in archives to post here and have not been successful. The condition of Emma's grave is a disgrace and is disrespectful to Emma who died a horrific, brutal death.
If Routt Young does not do the right thing by 6-27-11 (the second year anniversary of Emma's death), I will approach her and offer to pay for Emma's tombstone, ledger, etc. Like I said, money is no problem with Routt Young so I don't know why Emma does not have a tombstone! I certainly hope it is not because she was thought of so little and the feeling that Emma does not deserve a beautiful grave!
I do know for a fact that Routt Young testified for the defense and supported her daughter, Abigail Young. She did not give a Victim's Impact Statement on behalf of Emma, her granddaughter! How sad and pathetic is that! The aforementioned is just my opinion!
Once again, special thanks to you, Snaz, and Reality Chatter for all you have done for Emma! I know she is looking down from Heaven smiling at you and thankful that Reality Chatter has allowed a thread to be set up for her . . . . . so that all can know the circumstances of her horrific death and seek justice for her!
You have done an awesome job! For you, Snaz:
hug
Ann, thank you so much for little Emma's thread. This little girl deserved so much more in her young life, for starters a mother that would protect her. It's heartbreaking. The so called mom and boyfriend are utterly disgusting, makes me sick to my stomach.
JUSTICE FOR EMMA!!
Mom's trial revisiting tragedy of Emma
Jury will be selected to find out if nurse had a part in death
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
A year after a suburban 4-year-old's gruesome death helped force a state review of child abuse investigations in Houston, there's little else to show that Emma Thompson passed through this world. She's buried next to a grandfather she never met and no formal headstone is placed on her tiny grave, which features a humble funeral home marker and half-dead petunias.
Emma's mother chose to ignore the obvious abuse and kept lying and making excuses for her scum boyfriend. She deserves more than 20 years in prison.
I can't believe that Routt didn't give a Victim's Impact Statement on behalf of her granddaughter, but I guess that shouldn't surprise me considering that she didn't even get a headstone for Emma's grave.
It is sad that so many people failed Emma in life and after her death.
Ann, the real thanks goes to you. You need not thank me. As I said to you before, you did all the work... I just "prettied" it up a little. And everything I know about that, I pretty much learned from Fysty and J4A. So I'd say it was a joint effort. They've been wonderful teachers over the last year.
Thank you for your dedication to seeing that this child receives justice. I have both read in your words and heard in your voice your passion and compassion, and while Emma was not so lucky in life, she is lucky in death to have someone with your huge heart looking out for her.
Thank you again for bringing this precious child and her horrific death to our attention. She surely did not deserve to suffer the way she did. It breaks my heart that anyone could treat a child that way, much less a mother. Sad
I hope Emma's grandmother will do what's right. She already failed her granddaughter in life. The very least she can do is provide a headstone for this poor child's grave.
You welcome, Piper! A special thank you to Snaz for "getting" it off the ground and running!
Piper, I like the streamer you made for Emma! Too bad Young was not found guilty of the first degree felony. She deserves life in prison without parole.
Justice,
Thank you for finding this article! Also, thank you for posting the picture of Emma's grave. If Emma was my granddaughter, she would not have half dead petunias on her grave. How disrespectful to Emma!
Message to Margie Routt Young: Margie, let loose of some of your money and be a decent grandmother . . . please get Emma a tombstone, ledger and cradle. You were the talk of the town when the Chronicle published that article!
Do your social friends and the Board of Directors at Scott & White know you let your granddaughter's grave look terrible with half dead petunias and you leave faded floral arrangements on Emma's grave? I wish the Banner would've published the picture of Emma's grave. But . . . we know that won't happen!
Oh, by the way, please put age appropriate floral arrangements on Emma's grave.
Show some respect for Emma - your precious little granddaughter, who died a brutal, horrific death as a result of your daughter, Abigail's choice in a man named Lucas Ruric Coe!
If Abigail had not told so many, many lies to CPS and others, perhaps Emma would have been removed from the "home of horrors" and be alive today!
Margie, so many find it hard to believe that you did not seek justice for your granddaughter, Emma! Instead you testified for the defense and supported your daughter, Abigail! How disgusting! You remind me of Cindy Anthony!
Justice,
In testimony at Young's trial, it was revealed that passersby did CPR on Emma while, Abigail Young, the Registered Nurse mother, did nothing!
Also, per testimony, while EMS tried to save Emma, Registered Nurse Young was inside the EMS unit talking on her cell phone. What kind of loving mother would do that? Oh, that's right, the Prosecutors said Lucas Ruric Coe was more important to Young than Emma was!
