Friends of slain Garland parents still shocked

More than two weeks after Darlene Nevil was shot and killed in her Garland home, her body rests in a funeral home with no services scheduled. Her husband, Alan, died Thursday after being in a coma from a gunshot wound to the neck.

Across the county, her 12-year-old daughter sits in a juvenile detention center, accused in the deaths of her mom and stepdad. The girl's only guardian is a court-appointed attorney.

How it came to this, no one can really say.

On Friday, the charges against the 12-year-old girl and her 13-year-old boyfriend were upgraded from murder and aggravated assault to capital murder, which could send them to prison for 40 years, the maximum sentence for juveniles. The murder charges were upgraded because the crime now involves multiple slayings.

The crime has shocked Darlene Nevil's closest friends. It's left them shaken, confused and not wanting to believe what has happened.

"I'm having a really hard time with this," said Robin Schneider, who had been best friends with Darlene Nevil since they met 26 years ago in Ohio, where the two grew up. "I have a 15-year-old daughter, and fathoming her harming me is just ridiculous."

Schneider cannot get one question off her mind: How could someone so young stand accused of something so heinous?

Garland police aren't saying much about the killings. Because the suspects are minors, police have not identified them and decline to reveal their relationship to the victims. But family and friends said that the girl is Darlene Nevil's daughter and the boy is the daughter's boyfriend. The Dallas Morning News does not identify juveniles accused of crimes.

Former Oberlin woman, husband killed in Texas

A former Oberlin woman and her husband were gunned down in the Dallas suburb of Garland, Texas, last month, allegedly by her 12-year-old daughter and the daughter’s 13-­year-old boyfriend.

The slayings of Darlene Nevil, 46, and Alan Nevil, 48, have led both the daughter and the boyfriend to be charged with capital murder.

Under Texas law, that means they could each get 40 years behind bars, said Garland police Officer Joe Harn. Texas law also pro­hibits court officials from the Dallas County Juvenile Court from discussing the status of the case, although Harn said both children remain in custody and are awaiting trial.

The case shocked the suburb of about 230,000 people and has left friends of the Nevils asking why, according to Texas media coverage.

“I’m having a really hard time with this,” Darlene Nevil’s friend Robin Schneider told the Dallas Morning News earlier this month. “I have a 15-year-old daughter, and fathoming her harming me is just ridiculous.”

This is horrible. I'd say the parents were trying to enforce the rules and she wasn't having it, prodded by the boyfriend which they probably didn't care for. Twelve years old is too young to have a serious boyfriend, and too young to set your own rules. I don't know if that was the case, just my assumption. What a terrible shame.

The case of a Garland 12-year-old accused of killing her mother and stepfather will go to a jury trial Jan. 24.

The girl and her 13-year-old boyfriend are accused of capital murder in the Aug. 17 shootings of Darlene and Alan Nevil in their Garland home. Darlene Nevil died that day and her husband died Sept. 2.

Teenage Texas Murder Suspect Gets Trial Date
A Dallas area 13-year-old is set to stand trial in February charged with juvenile capital murder in the deaths of a Garland couple.

DALLAS (October 27, 2010)

A 13-year-old Dallas area boy is set to stand trial February 14, charged with the capital murders of a Garland couple.

The boy's 12-year-old girlfriend is charged in the deaths as well and her trial is set for Jan. 24.

Both children remain in juvenile detention.

13-Year-Old Reaches Plea Deal In Deaths Of Girlfriend’s Parents

AUSTIN (February 11, 2011)--A 13-year-old boy who’s accused of teaming up with his 12-year-old girlfriend to kill her mother and stepfather in suburban Dallas has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors that will keep him from going on trial for capital murder.

Details of the agreement reached this week were not released, but police said the teenager will serve at least 10 years behind bars because the charge was capital murder.

Garland teenager gets 20 years in shooting deaths of mother, stepfather

A 13-year-old Garland girl pleaded guilty to capital murder this morning in the Aug. 17 deaths of her mother and stepfather, Darlene and Alan Nevil.

The girl’s sentence, 20 years, is half of the maximum that she was facing and less than the 28 years handed down earlier this year to her 13-year-old boyfriend and accomplice. By law, both will serve at least 10 years.

The boy shot Darlene Nevil in the back and head. He then shot Alan Nevil four times. But Alan Nevil was able to get out of the home and in the 16 days before he died, he indicated to police and family that both his stepdaughter and her boyfriend were involved.
